15 Minute Pirate Bobbin Hourglass Pewter Spindles

RC058

Our very popular pirate bobbin hourglass is now also available in a smaller size!

As the Victorian cotton and woolen mills closed throughout the industrial North of England and Scotland over the last 40 years the antique wooden bobbins and shuttles left behind have been transformed into original wooden items.

These unique gifts stand the test of time and will conjure up for decades to come their past, each and every time they are viewed or handled.

This bobbin sand timer has unique pewter decorations on the spindles and black sand. A vintage thread spool sticker is placed on the base to give it even more character.

The sand glass is mouth-blown in the United Kingdom. As with all antique and hand-made items, the colors and decorations vary slightly. We consider this to be a special part of their history and character.

Delighted with my Pirate Bobbin Hourglass!

I am delighted with the quality, function, and aesthetic of these hourglasses! My first hourglass was a gift (the 15-minute, off-focus timer with blue sand – also available from JustHourglasses.com). This was what demonstrated the peaceful simplicity an hourglass provides. I wanted something more timeless in appearance, so I acquired the 15-minute Pirate Bobbin Hourglass w/ Black sand (right) and the 20-minute Antique Bobbin Sand Timer with white sand (left). I use these interchangeably daily for journaling, planning, and rest periods.

Prior to purchase, I had several specific and detailed questions regarding provenance, fit, and finish. Shannon took the time to quickly answer them all, including making her own inquiry to the tumbler, bobbin, and spindle supplier to verify their origins.

Fit and finish is exactly what I had hoped for! I was very concerned that the randomness of the raw materials would make for a twisted, warped, and frankly embarrassing final product once in hand. That wasn’t the case at all! There is some warp and unevenness in the bobbin ends – after all, they are antique castaways and were never intended to be reused some day in this manner. However, their minor imperfections are not distracting and do not diminish the appearance or function in any way.

They look magnificent and are a delight to use! I ran multiple time tests, and the 15-minute Pirate Bobbin Hourglass runs an average of 15:10 (+1%, 99% accuracy) and the 20-minute Antique Bobbin Hourglass runs an average of 20:17 (+2%, 98% accuracy).

SO cool!

I bought my first bobbin hourglass from a catalog almost 20 years ago and it became a priceless family favorite, with all of the kids dedicated to turning it over as soon as the sand had run out. As the kids have grown up and have begun moving out, I was so excited to find Just Hourglasses - now I can send each of them off (eventually!) with a surprise hourglass of their own, with a warm, familiar feel of home! The hourglasses I purchased are beautifully unique, (the black sand is particularly interesting) I’m delighted with my purchases!

A lovely hourglass, with an almost insignificant minor flaw

The Bobbin Hourglass looks just like the picture on the website. It's old, in a good, Dickensian way. The only minor flaw is the sand flows as a 63 minute hour, not 60 minutes. But the website is upfront about this issue, and indicates the hourglass is 60 minutes, plus or minus 10%. My OCD should not deter anyone less obsessive from getting this hourglass (or the new version, since the one I received is no longer available).

Pirates treasure found

When this arrived it was a pleasant surprise in that it was even nicer than expected. The pewter trim and aged wood end pieces gave it exactly the antique Pirates of the Caribbean look I was hoping for. Worth every nickel as a home accent piece.
